One time in India, no far away, was a very holy man, a saint full of compassion, sweetness and devotion. His name was Nanak. Guru Nanak was loved by many, especially women who enjoyed sitting with him long hours and listening to his captivating songs of divine love.
When the woman returned home, they found their husband no happy or interested in more mundane matters. The group of woman devotees requested from Nanak what they can do to alleviate their husband’s tempers. Nanak, in full understanding of the difference between the man and the woman, and the gift that woman have to influence their creation, went for a 10 days retreat.
When Guru Nanak came back from his retreat, he came back with this prayer: So purk.
He indicated to do this prayer eleven times in one day, at different times. He say this prayer will balance the psyche of any man. As a wife, mother, daughter, or sister, you can use it.
I have done this prayer not only for one day but for 1000 days. I dedicated this prayer to my children when they were passing through the discomforts of teen age.
Now, 6 years later, I have faith that this contribution had made me a compassionate and patient mother. The prayer transformed me, and not sure if it was because of my own changes that my boys grow very saintly, calm and patient, but it is surely a jewel from the Sikh tradition to any woman.
Enjoy it.
SO PURK
I know that I am One with God. This is my true Guru’s Gift.
The Primal One is perfectly pure. The Primal God is perfect. He is within all and beyond all.
Everyone meditates. All souls meditate on You, O True Creator.
All souls are one with You. All souls come from You.
O Saints, meditate on God and all pains will fly away.
God Himself is the Master. God Himself is the Servant. O Nanak, everyone is empty-handed before Him.
You are in each beat of my heart, and in all hearts. O Lord, you are the One in everyone.
Some are givers and some are takers. This is all Your play.
You are the Giver and You are the receiver. It is all You.
You are the God of all; endless and Infinite. I have no words to describe your virtues.
O Lord, Nanak is a sacrifice unto those who serve and serve You forever.
Meditate on God. Meditate on God and your soul will be at peace in this world.
Meditate on God and live free. Live free and know the noose of death is meaningless.
Meditate on the fearless One, the fearless God, and live free from fear.
Those who serve, O those who serve my Lord, are one with Har and they look divine. Blessed, O blessed are they who meditate on Har. Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to them. Devotion to You, O devotion to You is a treasure trove that ever overflows.
Your lovers, O Your lovers praise You, my Beloved, forever and ever.
For You, just for You O Lord, so many poojas are performed and so many endlessly chant and discipline themselves.
For You, just for You O Lord, so many read the Smirtis and Shastras. They do Kriyas and ceremonies.
Those lovers, those lovers are sublime, O servant Nanak, who are pleasing to God.
You are the Primal One, the most awesome Creator of everything. There is none as great as You.
Throughout time and beyond time, You are the One, constant and True Creator.
You do everything, and may everything happen according to your Will.
You create the whole universe. You destroy it and create it again.
Servant Nanak sings the praises of his beloved Lord forever and ever.
He is the Knower within all souls.
